Maybe this is a dumb question, but why would you need sleeper cars on a train in Great Britain if the length of the island is a little over 800 miles?

Well, that 800 miles would take you all day, so some plump for it taking all night instead. It's really a night train with beds rather than a long haul train that you live on for a while. Most passengers actually use from central Scotland to London, which is only 400 miles. But you arrive in London, or Edinburgh, or Glasgow ahead of the start of the business day.

OK that makes sense, thanks for answering.
