Kinda makes you wonder why the didn't order those 9's with widecabs in the first place?

They didn't order them with safety cabs in the first place because NS was cheap, sticking with "spartan" cabs (even to the extent of not having toilets for the crews) until the "safety" cabs became the norm and GE changed the "spartan" cab to being an extra cost "option" to discourage making the different cab models to reduce production costs through standardization. At that point, NS "saw the light."
