The 2D2-9100's were the first class of 1500vdc heavy mainline electrics built for SNCF after World War II, and they were in the tradition of 2D2 types going back to the 1920's. Thirty-five were built for the Paris-Lyon electrification and they served until 1988. They made about 5000hp and were designed to run at 140kph. One unit, 2D2-9135, is preserved in working order.
