I don't get why engineers do this. Why not sit down in the cab that has AC/Heat? Why stand outside the locomotive?

By rule, unless inclement weather, you must operate the remote outside the cab. The correct term for this crew position is Remote Control Operator. An Engineer operates the locomotive only from the cab control stand.
