Beautiful photo Brian - love everything about it. Do you have any information about the Loreley Tunnel portal, and why it's designed like a Castle facade? Just curious. Still, a beautiful photo.

This tunnel was built in 1859-61 with two tracks and was singled when the was electrified in 1961 and a second tunnel was bored to give sufficient clearance for the overhead wires. The new northbound tunnel is behind the wall on the right. Why the tunnel portals a long the Rhine are so re so decorative I don't know but can only assume it was to match all the castles etc along this fascinating stretch of the Rhine gorge between Koblenz and Bingen. Since then the old tunnel has undergone a major renovation with a concrete insert placed through the tube.
