Am glad there were no injuries. Now, off to look up how many SD38-2 were built; don't often hear of them so there can't be very many, has to be less than a hundred.

This a GP38-2, rebuilt from an original high-nosed GP38-2 (SOU 5176) with the NS-designed Admiral Cab. NS does not have any true SD38s left on its roster. The remaining few, which were inherited from Conrail, were sold off to to NRE and CIT a few years ago. There is one SD38-2 on the roster (3821) which is actually a rebuild from an SD40-2. As an aside, this photo gave me pause because the AC18 local here in Chattanooga has 5170 leading right now, and I thought "my job" had gone in the ballast!

There were 81 SD38-2s built. between November 1972 and June 1979. 88 if you count the 7 that were built for export.

Well, now it definitely classifies as a Somewhat Distressed 38-2.

This is why the “Admiral” cab is better!!!! It’s worth the protection of the crew!
