When I was a long distance truck driver until I retired earlier this year, when I got the chance, I would drive U.S. 30 rather than Interstate 80 just so that I could watch the Union Pacific and other smaller railroads such as the Nebraska Central. U.S. 30 generally follows the Union Pacific tracks for hundreds of miles throughout Nebraska including Brule. Brule is a small town about 10 miles west of Ogallala. I used to park my rig overnight near the tracks mostly near the large grain bins including the ones in the photo along different towns along U.S. 30 overnight just to watch the trains. While parked in Brule one late evening, I remember seeing a young man and woman had climbed onto the leeward end of a covered grain hopper car giving themselves a free westbound ride about 60 to 70 MPH. I doubt that Union Pacific would have liked that! Since I retired, I miss seeing the western part of the country along with the large and small railroads there such as the Nebraska Central. I doubt that I will ever see a lot of Western railroads again since I reside in upper East Tennessee. where the CSX KD Subdivision tracks are directly behind my house. Don't see many CSX trains anymore like I used to since CSX went to this precision railroading method. Bad idea, but that is my opinion of it.
