Not sure if rule still applies, but if the autorack leaves the rail for any reason, its contents must be scrapped and crushed. This is/was liability guidance from the insurance companies. Sad thing none the less.

I hope no one was hurt.

That is true. An auto rack that has left the track with loads, even if the vehicles are unharmed, they still must be scrapped.
|
That rule is stupid. Oh well. Props for going out there in the snow. It must have been cold.

Contrary to popular belief, NS piles them up too... CSX does not have a monopoly on derailments

John, great capture of a not-so-great situation. I thought about the guys cleaning up this mess in the cold and snow, and I sure am glad I'm retired!

Worked at the former Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain, Ohio one time NS had a major derailment just west of the plant involving a auto rack train, 20 of 50 cars left the track, when the wreck was finally cleared, the damaged cars and trucks were piled into what looked like a mountain, all vehicles involved in any derailment are crushed and destroyed even if they appear to be undamaged.
