So... there's a diesel on the other end shoving, I guess? Is there an operational reason for not putting a diesel on the front instead of using a cab car? Where do they revert to electric traction going west (and east). Thanks for your info.

It's essentially a Springfield Shuttle set (cab car + coach + P42) towing the normal consist. This saves from dissembling a shuttle set just to tow two trains for the night. This is how it works; 65 (westbound) pulls into New Haven. The shuttle set (tow consist) is tacked on to the head end and tows 65 through Metro North territory. Once they get Manor interlocking on the Hell Gate Line (just west of MNR Div post) the shuttle set is uncoupled and moved to the adjacent track where it waits for 66. 65 continues west as normal with its original leader. 66 pulls up to Manor and the same set is tacked on to the head end, and tows that train up to New Haven. At New Haven the set comes off and goes back into the yard where it will be used the same morning on the Springfield Line. 66 continues east as normal with its original leader.
