Is the rail alongside the main ready to be installed - or what was it recently taken out of service? Either way, perhaps only in hindsight, it seems odd for rail replacement at this stage of twilight for Tennessee Pass.

This was about the time of the horrible runaway that killed the Engineer and student engineer. I was a brakeman at Minturn when the SP AC's were brand new. At this very location cars were derailed all over the place, I worked a few wreck trains to recover the derailed cars.

Regarding why there is rail lying next to the mainline. Those curves were so sharp that they had to get new rail quite frequently. Even though the line was on the chopping block it still had to be maintained in a safe manner.
