In the mid-1980's, a family that was friends of my grandmother lived on the east side of the river up the hill from this bridge. We would visit some time in July and they let us pick several buckets of cherries from their orchard. You could see most of the bridge and the West side. Every time a train rolled by, my work was lost to watching the train cross this bridge, although I only got to see mainly the rooftops of the rolling stock. I remember Overland Brass or one of those other companies produced a brass model of this bridge. They gave a history of it. The original structure was built in 1892 and over time deemed too light for heavier equipment of later times. So instead of delaying traffic by replacing the span or spending alot of money to build a new one, they built a stronger truss bridge around the original in 1925. According to Wikipedia, this also was the first bridge to cross the Columbia River. Quite a history!
