This location looks as if its w. of Martin and along the Price river in Utah. The Rio Grande Railroad runs alongside the river into Helper and then on over to Price. You can see that this is the place where the tracks split up to reach the coal loadout places up in the canyons and so. Its a piece of Rio Grande RR. Mainline into Denver from Salt Lake City. Yea, that looks like a Utah rock over there. Nice photo Jason. Thanks.

There is a very interesting Wikipedia article of the storied history of the MK5000C locomotive. Beginning it’s life as a 5000 hp unit with a 5000 hp Caterpillar V12 3612 diesel engine which soon became troublesome it was replaced with used EMD 3500 Horsepower 16-645F3B diesel engines from 5 retired Union Pacific EMD SD50. At the time of this photo it would appear that these were 3500hp locomotives. More at:

They were all rebuilt shortly after arriving on the Utah Railway. The cab interior and most of the car-body was still MK. Engine, cooling and much of the electrical was changed. Cool Motors.
