I love this photo Craig, nice view and interesting capture of the "human element" involved and forgotten about with railroading. I remember working at a tourist railroad that had overhear power catenary for their trolleys and streetcars, and they had a couple of center-cab locomotives too. We had to do a lot of pole switching/adjusting too...but it is possible to operate on one pole (called "pushing" the pole when you reverse), though that practice is highly NOT recommended, especially for long periods of operations. However, with a lot of switching maneuvers, I'm sure the Iowa Traction crews know what they can and can't "get away" with when it comes to operating and the pole contact with the overhead wire on the catenary.
