Very interesting line. Strange to see a double line track with a divergence around a pond. Was this done when the track was double tracked at a later date so they wouldn't have to deal with the pond?

As told to me by another operator on the Illinois Central in the 1960s, the track on the right was built by the Illinois Central and the track on the left was built by one of the predecessors of the CB&Q. Both lines were run as single track until some time later when the ICC mandated that the two railroads share the tracks between Portage and East Cabin and operate them as double track with right-hand running. A deep dive into the archives of the ICC could reveal more details.
