August 18, 1957 - my mother was nearby in Altoona celebrating her 17th birthday when this photo was taken. Mom lived near Slope Tower where this strong beast, and many of her sisters, pushed and pulled many tons of freight up and down the mountain. Mom frequently tells me that one of her weekly chores was to sweep the cinders off of her mom and dad's front porch - and your photo certainly shows the magnitude of cinders that PRR steam locomotives belched as evident by the black well cindered covered ground. Thanks for sharing - I'm definitely going to show mom this photo!
