Such a cool photograph, you don't see many photographs of these engines in service let alone a color one. Thanks for showing us.

Now that's something special. A handsome locomotive, indeed. And look at that short, high class consist soon to race across the Rock Island Line.

Nice photo Edward - and yes, rare to see one of these in service, and in color, to echo a fellow railfan's comment. Please excuse my confusion - but the details indicate 2-8-8-2, yet in the remarks you say it's a 2-8-8-4? Also, you say the year is 1940 in the location/Date information, but then say 1939 in the description. Again, please forgive me of my confusion, but I'd like some clarification, if you'd be so kind! Thank you!

Great question Dana. I couldn't find the option to load this as steam 2-8-8-2 but I will double-check that again. I live in New Zealand and have these in my collection from a deceased estate so I can only go on these wonderful notes that are included with the photos. The date on the photo says May 11, 1940. and I found online that this locomotive was built in 1939. Hope that helps though as I just personally love this photo in particular as New Zealand never had anything like this and in fact our articulated locomotives were considered a failure and the three were rebuilt as conventional 4-6-2 Pacifics instead,

I believe the description says the engine was built in 1939. Although this is a publicity photo, most railroads usually didn't take such images when equipment was brand new just out of the factory. It's also publicity for the railroad and not a promo for Lima Locomotive works.
