Always wondered about the grade separation at this location. Would double tracking have been the reason?

I believe one line was originally Illinois Central, and the other Chicago, Burlington & Quincy—later both used as shared trackage. I’m not sure who was there first.

I was told by my trainer on the Illinois Central, Robert Spautz, that the IC built the line on the right, followed some time later by a predecessor of the CB&Q building the other line. It was a case of first come gets to build closer to the bluff.
