Something like this happened in the U.K. A big load of old Steam locos were sent to Barry Scrapyard in Wales when diesels came in. The owner of the yard was busy cutting up wagons, faster and easier and a quicker financial return, leaving the locos for later. A few people got together and raised some money and bought one of the locos for preservation. Other people heard about this and it snowballed from there. The owner was pleased, he was getting more than the scrap value and not having any outlet to pay, i.e. wages, gas for cutting and so on. That is why we have as many preserved steam locos running as we have. If the locos had been cut first, we would not have anywhere near the number of live steam locomotives on preserved lines today.
