''loaded auto racks making it a costly derailment''
The average car buyer has no clue to what happens to auto rack inventory post-derailment.
The short answer is the railroad 'eats' the loss. Every vehicle is accounted for and completely destroyed never to enter the market as a spare part or refurbished vehicle. The railroad is on the hook for the entire wholesale cost of the car and must have independent evidence from a third party that the vehicle was totally destroyed.
