It was because of this locomotive, and sister locomotive 4000, that the cab forwards came about. They were delivered in 1909 as "conventional" MC-1 2-8-8-2s and they were the engines that highlighted the problem of smoke asphyxiating the crews in tunnels and snowsheds. The group of 2-8-8-2s that followed these two engines (MC-2s) were the first engines built as cab forwards. 4001 was rebuilt as a cab forward (and reclassified as an MC-2) in 1923, converted from compound to simple steaming and re-classified as an AC-1 in 1931, and then retired and scrapped in 1947.
