A very interesting photo. This appears to be an eastbound Sunset ARRIVING at newly opened LAUPT from San Francisco (even numbers were eastbound as defined by the SP rule books and timetables). I do not have access to any references, but if I remember correcty (always a question at my age) before WW2 the Sunset originated at San Francisco. From LAUPT this train would later use one of the two tracks crossing left to right in the foregraound to head for New Orleans.

What a great photograph. A whole lot to look at and think about here in this shot. In a little over a year the world would change dramatically for this train, its crew, and the U.S.

The internet lists #4414 as a GS-2 class locomotive and was built in 1937 and scrapped along with her five other sisters in 1956. The internet also said that the GS-2 class were the first SP locomotives to wear the distinctive red and orange Daylight colors except during WWII when they painted black. Thanks for sharing this neat glimpse of SP history.
