This was the Yancey Railroad's bridge over the Toe River at Kona, back when it was still standing. Unfortunately, the bridge was first damaged by a bulldozer and later burned by vandals.
Now that it's history, I thought I'd post another angle of the partially collapsed Toe River Bridge showing what once would have passed for ties but have now been reduced to a lot of spongy sawdus... (more)
After a crew change, this northbound Savannah, GA to Erwin, TN intermodal heads out of Kona. Meanwhile, a coal drag, much more typical for this line, passes by headed south.
The day is fading fast as this northbound train of empties passes yet another foot bridge over the Toe River at Kona.
An abandoned spur off the main once crossed the Toe River (perhaps to reach a mine?) near Kona. Now the second span of this through truss bridge has collapsed into the river.
Alongside the mainline through the Toe River gorge, we came across this little speeder lettered for the Toe River RR on an abandoned spur adjacent to a collapsed through truss bridge. Anyone know... (more)
