August of 1969, the F-unit era on the SP was drawing to a close as #6337 emerges from Niles Canyon, just West of Sunol. Today, this right of way is the home of the Niles Canyon Railway
Visible in this photo is the end the Milwaukee blinded, first on the two passenger Joe's then later to all of them.
Following the St. Joe River out of Avery, MILW E21 is climbing as heads East.
At the Avery Depot, ready to head East, E21 is MU'd with what appers to be 3 GP40's. Today, the depot remains but the right of way is now a road.
SP rebuilt SD40R has emerged from Tunnel #17 West of Newcastle on the #2 track. Three SD40T2's and an SD45 make up the rest of the lash-up.
The Sword of Damocles had fallen on the SP a month before but few outward changes were visible as Rio Grande Tunnel Motor #5365 races Eastward thru the community of Lockwood, just East of Sparks. ... (more)
