An eastbound Southern Pacific sugar beet train, with Cotton Belt SD45T-2 9268 on the point, has just begun to depart San Luis Obispo, on California's scenic central coast, following a crew change. The train will skirt the Pacific for 24 and a half miles until it arrives at Guadalupe, the interchange with the Santa Maria Valley Railroad. The SMVR will handle the beets from there to the sugar mill at nearby Betteravia. Two extinct volcanoes, which make this town so scenic, loom in the background.
