Remarks & Notes
Snoqualmie Tunnel in the Cascade Mountains of Washington was completed in 1914. It served the Milwaukee Road for 66 years hosting everything from the Olympian Hiawatha to the "Dead Freights" of the 1970s. After the Milwaukee Road's last train left the west coast in March of 1980 the tunnel became under the control of Washington state. It is now part of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. In January 2009 the tunnel was closed due to fears of the tunnel being weekend by freezing/thawing of water and the possibility of falling concrete (or the lawsuits that would follow). After $672,000 of renovation the tunnel was reopened July 5, 2011 and now bikers and Milwaukee Road fans can once again enjoy the 2.3 mile long tunnel.
