The Metro m2 in Lausanne was opened in 2008. It replaces the acient rack railway from Ouchy to Flon and adds a further 4.4km to it. The new system is a fully automatic, Rubber-tyred metro. Most of the line is underground but it has three short parts which are over ground - one is the "Pont Charles Bessières" between the stations Riponne and Bessières. This bridge was built below an existing street bridge and helps to cross a small valley. In the background Lausanne's cathedral "Notre-Dame" could be seen.
