On May 12th, 1981, Southern Pacific 4449, a GS-4 class 4-8-4 (owned by the city of Portland, Oregon), leads a short officer special eastbound through Mojave, California, after conquering the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains. The trainorders on the hoops are yet another then-common railroad practice that would not last much longer. The Santa Fe Railway has trackage rights over this section of the Southern Pacific, between Mojave and Bakersfield, and the orders in the hoops are for Santa Fe 5168, a westbound due past the depot soon.
