The presence of a company photographer, officials, and other supernumeraries tells us this is no ordinary train parked at Tenneco north of Denver. In mid-June, 1965, UP has dispatched a special freight west out of Kansas City, 52 cars behind 760/754/76B/72B –- two GP35s, two DD35Bs -- bound for Los Angeles. Ordinarily, hot West Coast freight would take the Marysville cutoff north from Topeka to the mainline. But congestion has prompted the railroad to try the little-trafficked Kansas Pacific to Denver before turning north. Everything depends on precision and timing: Instead of entering the Denver yards, the train has swung around the wye at Pullman Junction and paused here for servicing. The crew has been changed, mechanics are swarming over the engines, a tank truck is pumping fuel, and the whole works will be on the road again in less than half an hour.
