Leading BNSF Railway train Z-LACNWH3-19A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to North Baltimore OH) is BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4709. It may not be obvious, but this locomotive wears a unique version of the BNSF's paint scheme … Well, actually, two versions! BNSF 4709 was built in January 1998 and delivered in the then-current "Heritage II" scheme, although without lettering, painted orange and green with yellow striping and lettering. It was wrecked on Halloween 2000 at Bellemont, AZ, and repaired and returned to service two years later. At some point, however, it was overhauled and the shop crew replaced the engine compartment section of the long hood with a long hood from a BNSF "Superfleet" Dash 9-44CW. This, naturally, leads one to wonder if there is a reverse counterpart roaming the system as well, painted in the red and silver "Superfleet" scheme but with the engine compartment painted in orange, green and yellow.
