| The power off an eastbound Union Pacific freight passes Colton Tower as it completes setting out some cars to be interchanged to the Southern Pacific. The tracks running perpendicular to the line the UP is on is SP's Sunset Route. Colton Tower, which protects this diamond that sees traffic from Santa Fe, SP and UP, has survived a derailment (note the patch in the corner of the structure) but it could not fend off progress - within a few more years, the tower would be razed and Colton Crossing would become a lot less interesting to photograph.
