Starting in late 1979, C&NW took delivery from EMD of 35 GP38-2s that Rock Island had ordered, then cancelled. Three are shown here in a typical application - heading up the former M&StL to Albert Lea and on to the Twin Cities. Crew probably loved the new units, but they spelled the end for many first-generation diesels. I think the M&StL line north of Marshalltown is gone now, or at least o.o.s
